Endangered Status The Slackwater Darter is on the U.S. Endangered Species List. It is classified as threatened throughout its range in Alabama and Tennessee. Because this species uses different breeding and nonbreeding habitats, it has been quite vulnerable to habitat destruction. Residential development, draining of stream overflow, low groundwater levels, and pollutants in the water have all contributed to the degradation of one or both of its needed habitats.
