Description Similar to Sooty Tern, with mostly white underparts, except for contrastingly dark flight feathers, and sooty black upperparts, except for white forehead; note, however, that darkcap is separated from blackish back by white nape. Juvenile is similar, but black elements of plumage are brown.
Dimensions Length: 14-15" (36-38 cm)
Habitat Flight and habits are similar to Sooty.
Range Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Florida
Discussion Another mainly tropical, oceanic tern that is occasionally seen off Gulf and Atlantic coasts.
