Description 2 3/4-4 1/2" (7-11.5 cm). Resembles Red-backed Salamander found in the East. Back stripe well defined; even edged; red, yellow, green or tan; extends to tail tip. Some dark individuals lack stripe; others lack dark pigment and are largely color of stripe. Upper sides dark brown or black; salt and pepper flecking on belly. Costal grooves, 16.
Breeding Mates November to December; lays clutch of about 10 eggs April to May; hatchlings 7/8" (22 mm) long appear in fall, mature in 2 1/2 years. Females lay eggs every other year.
Habitat Variety of habitats, including moisture-laden rock slides; damp, shaded ravines; Douglas fir forests; near sea level to 4,100' (1,250 m).
Range From sw. Oregon north to Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
Discussion Most numerous and wide-ranging western woodland salamander. It is found under stones, logs, moss, and woodland debris, usually in situations less damp than those preferred by Dunn's Salamander.
