Description A shrub-like plant with spreading or erect, hairy stems, often in large dense patches, and whitish to pale pink, urn-shaped flowers hanging along reddish or salmon racemes in upper leaf axils.
Flowers: Corolla 3/8" (9 mm) long, hairy, with 5 pointed lobes around opening. Bloom May-July.
Leaves: 2-4" (5-10 cm) long, ovate, with many minute teeth on edges.
Fruit: Dark purple berry, 1/4-1/2" (6-13 mm) wide.
Height: 4-48" (10-120 cm).
Habitat Woods and brush.
Range Alaska and British Columbia south to southern California.
Discussion The berries are a source of food for wildlife and were once also eaten by coastal Native Americans. The leaves are often used in flower arrangements.
