Alternate name: Spotted Flounder/Sand Dab

Description To 18" (46 cm). Highly compressed; depth about two-thirds length, eyes on left side. Eyed side translucent, olive, brownish, reddish, or grayish, mottled with numerous small, irregular, lighter or darker blotches on head, sides, and fins; blind side white, sometimes with dusky blotches. Lower jaw projects slightly beyond upper; maxilla reaches middle of eye; preopercle visible. Pelvic fin bases very long, extend toward head; dorsal fin origin over snout, first few rays free without membrane between them. Lateral line highly arched anteriorly.

Habitat Over sand, from near shore to depths of about 25 fathoms.

Range From Gulf of St. Lawrence and Nova Scotia to Florida.

Discussion The Windowpane is most common in the New England states, where it is a year-round resident. It is of little importance as a food or game fish.
