Family: Chaetodontidae, Butterflyfishes view all from this family

Description A small butterflyfish with a short snout and a large black spot surrounded by a white ring on body below rear of dorsal fin. Body whitish, with narrow, dark, diagonal lines that meet at mid-side, forming series of forward-pointing chevrons. Dark band from nape through eye to lower edge of gill cover. TL to 2 7/8 “ (7.5 cm).

Habitat Common on coral reefs and related inshore habitats.

Range Bermuda, Atlantic coast from Massachusetts to n South America, Bahamas, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean, including Antilles.

Discussion A delight for snorkelers, the Foureye Butterflyfish is often seen in pairs or in larger groups on reefs. Like other butterflyfishes, if a pair gets separated, one partner will swim upward for a better view in an effort to locate and rejoin its partner. This is the only species in our region with converging lines along the side.
