Chipmunks in Winter

I am an elementary teacher. I have found a number of differing opinions about what chipmunks do in winter. Some places say the chipmunk is a true hibernator; others that it is just dormant. The Vt. Institute of Nat. Science claims our only true mammal hibernators are woodchuck, jumping mouse, and little brown bat. Can you help?

Well, I hate to disagree with your local Natural History Museum, but I would have to assert that Chipmunks in Vermont are true hibernators. Follow the link below to an eNature article which addresses the definitions of winter dormancy and hibernation.
