How do I stop the bird form pecking house?

I'm having trouble identifying a wood pecking bird that has taken to pecking on the roof frame of my house. Although I suspect it's a form of woodpecker, it doesn't haven't the red spot on the head nor is it black. It has gray and white coloring. Are there other type of wood pecking birds? How do I stop these birds from pecking at my house?

Perhaps your bird is a White-breasted Nuthatch. Sometimes these and other birds will grab seeds from feeders and open them by banging them against a hard object, such as a house. I do not know how to discourage nuthatches.
