Mediterranean Geckos are predators, they require live, active prey such as crickets. You should also feed them other insects (like flies) if you can capture them and you are sure they are pesticide free. If you want to keep a pet lizard healthy on a steady diet of crickets, you will need to make sure that the crickets are well fed, and dust the crickets with vitamin powder before putting them in with the lizard. The amount of food should be adjusted to the amount the lizard will eat within an hour of feeding, don’t leave crickets running around in the lizard’s cage, they may stress the lizard and can actually hurt the gecko when they become hungry and start to nibble on it’s toes and tail.
Normally we don’t give advice on keeping wild animals as pets, but since this species is actually a non native invader it may be an appropriate animal for keeping in the home. Remember, once you take on the responsibility of any living pet, you must do everything in your power to keep it healthy. If you get bored with it and end up letting a sick animal go back into the wild, you may introduce a disease into the wild population that will have far reaching consequences.
