Mallards

We have seven mallard ducks for which we would like to build a shelter. We can only find information on wood duck shelters. Will mallards use a shelter? What kind and how big for seven?

Birding Expert - George H. Harrison

Mallards will not use man-made shelters of any kind. They nest on the ground and roost on water. Wood ducks are tree ducks, and nest naturally in tree cavities, and therefore, will use a large birdhouse in which to nest. The seven mallards will find natural cover in which to roost and stay out of severe weather. When the water freezes, they may migrate south for the winter.
