dolphinfish

are dolphin fish food that dolphins eat?

Wildlife Expert - Ken Burton

Fish in the Family Coryphaenidae go by many names, including dolphin, dolphinfish, dorado, and mahi mahi. The more familiar mammalian dolphins may eat small dolphinfish, but some adult dolphinfish reach 6-1/2 feet in length, far too big for mammalian dolphins to eat. The word "dolphin" originates from the Greek "delphys" (meaning "womb") and was applied first to the mammal, perhaps because the Greeks were struck with the notion of a "fish" giving birth to live young. The name has been applied to the real fish only since the late 16th Century, probably because their large size, sleek shape, and great speed reminded people of the mammal.
