white tail deer

we have 8 white tails in our area and we have begun to feed them cracked corn. My son says that their digestive systems change in the winter and that they are not able to digest the same foods that they eat in the summer, and that they have been known to starve to death eating hay and straw. Any such danger with the corn? Thanks

Wildlife Expert - Ken Burton

Yes, the same danger exists with corn as with hay. The deer may not have the symbiotic microorganisms they need to digest artificial foods and can starve to death on full stomachs.

For this and many other reasons, winter deer feeding, though well intentioned, may do more harm than good. There's an excellent essay on the subject at the link below.
