All Monarch populations are migratory. They congregate in the fall and fly south; midwestern populations go to Mexico. They head north again in the spring, breeding and dying along the way. Thus, they overwinter as adults on the winter grounds and the ones that return to the summer grounds are the descendants of those that left the previous year.
