Florida Sandhill Cranes

In the marsh next to my mobile, there are two Sandhill Cranes. They have been taking turns sitting on eggs now for about 5-6 weeks. I understood the gestation time was 30-32 days. Could there be something wrong and why wouldn't the cranes stop sitting?

You're right about the incubation (not gestation) period. There well could be something wrong. Perhaps the eggs are infertile. Birds often will sit on infertile eggs well beyond the normal incubation period before giving up. If the cranes are young, the chances are greater both that the eggs are infertile and that they wouldn't know when to stop incubating.
