How to ID a Bird: Step 6 -- season & range

When and Where?

Some birds take on different appearances in different seasons, showing colorful breeding plumages or changing from juvenile to adult feather patterns. Many birds live in different areas at different times. Other birds look different in different regions. It may seem difficult to keep up with the many regional variants in the birding world and with seasonal population changes -- but this is part of the wonderful challenge of birding! Get a good field guide and take advantage of migration periods, when you will see a much greater variety of species then can normally be found in your range, as large numbers of birds are on the move from one seasonal home to another.

Check out the Regional Birder for a monthly update on what to see in your region.
